'Control' capture's Joy Division singer
Deborah and Ian find each other's hands literally behind their pal's back. Despite this display of adolescent furtiveness and casual betrayal, it's a sharp, affecting little scene. Ian's sensitivity touches Deborah — they marry when she's 18 and he's 19 — but a gulf emerges between them. His devotion to literature ranging from J.G. Ballard's "Crash" to T.S. Eliot's "The Hollow Men," and his love of Bowie and Lou Reed, signify his desire to get out of Macclesfield. But Deborah hopes his urge for transcendence will simply make family life in Macclesfield more wonderful. Even after Joy Division signs on with Manchester impresario Tony Wilson (Craig Parkinson), Ian works at a state employment office during the day, specializing in applicants with special needs, such as a young man with Down's syndrome and an epileptic young woman.
